I'm currently running 10.8.5 on a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. I see I can't upgrade to Sierra but I'm wondering if there is a way to upgrade to Mavericks, Yosemite, or El Capitan with my current system. I haven't updated in a while but I would like to update this mac.

I am on the Apple mailing list and they said I can upgrade Sierra for free. Is that possible? I thought it is now a paid upgrade. I am currently on Lion v10.7.5. Also can I make the quantum jump from Lion to Sierra or do I have to create a partition or what? I am not tech savvy.

The last paid OSx upgrade was 10.8 Mountain Lion for $19.99.
After that all OSx upgrades have been free.
Yes, you can update to Sierra if your Mac supports it for free from the Mac App Store.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
Why don't you simply update your web browser as I advised you to do in another post you posted in here?

Updating your web browser to be more secure is the quickiest and easiest solution to solve your security problem on OS X 10.7 Lion.
Especially if you can't upgrade your Mac past OS X 10.7.5 Lion.
